Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership to host Iowa STEM Education Symposium
The Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership (IMSEP) will host an "Iowa STEM Education Public-Private Partnerships Symposium," co-sponsored by Rockwell Collins and the Association of Business and Industry, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Maucker Union Ballroom at the University of Northern Iowa.
The purpose of the symposium is to spawn new partnerships between educators and business leaders across Iowa, as well as highlight existing partnerships.
The symposium program includes opening remarks from Benjamin Allen, UNI president. Judy Jeffrey, Iowa Department of Education director, will give remarks and perspectives on STEM education in Iowa.
The keynote speaker, Valerie Halverson Pace, west region manager for corporate citizenship and corporate affairs with IBM, will discuss creating effective learning partnerships, the benefits of a private and public sector partnership, and IBM's experience in supporting K-12 STEM education. There will also be a panel discussion with business and education leaders.
Examples of IBM's learning partnerships include the Transition to Teaching program which provides support for employees to become K-12 math and science teachers through partnerships with colleges and universities; and the Rochester Area Math and Science Partnership, founded in 1990 by IBM, Mayo Clinic and Rochester public schools -- focusing on improvement in math and science.
For more information, contact Kari Jastorff, IMSEP program manager, at (319) 273-2959 or visit the symposium Web site.
IMSEP is a state funded initiative led by UNI, in partnership with Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. IMSEP's goals are to improve mathematics and science performance of Iowa students; prepare more high-quality mathematics and science teachers for Iowa's schools; and to promote statewide collaboration and cooperation.
