University of Northern Iowa introduces I-Teach Mathematics and Science course

The University of Northern Iowa is tackling Iowa's shortage of mathematics and science teachers head-on by offering the I-Teach Mathematics and Science Seminar this fall for UNI students majoring in mathematics or science. Twenty-four students are enrolled at UNI in this first-time seminar and nine are enrolled at UNI's partner site, North Iowa Area Community College.

I-Teach is a program of Iowa's three state universities in eventual partnership with Iowa community colleges and private colleges.

The purpose of the seminar is to expose science students to possible careers as mathematics and science teachers to boost the number and diversity of Iowa teachers in these disciplines. The I-Teach seminar meets one hour per week and exposes students to current mathematics and science teachers excelling in their careers. Some of the themes in the weekly seminar include "Teaching v. Tonsillectomies- A Day in the Life"; "The Other Side of the Desk"; and "Modern Parents in the Life of a Teacher." Students will complete the seminar with a visit from the 2005 Iowa Teacher of the Year, Ernie Schiller, who will present "Why Bother Teaching, Really?"

Students in the I-Teach Seminar can participate in three teaching opportunities with middle school children; benefit from internships in museums, nature centers, after-school programs and more; and can apply for scholarships and seek mentors who are current math and science teachers.

The I-Teach Seminar is part of the Iowa Math and Science Education Partnership (IMSEP), a state funded initiative led by UNI, in partnership with Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. IMSEP's goals are to improve mathematics and science performance of Iowa students, to prepare more high quality mathematics and science teachers for Iowa's schools, and to promote statewide collaboration and cooperation.
