2009 SUMMER OF STARS
IMSEP Programming Additions
The Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership (IMSEP) is supporting math- and science-related programming at several Iowa science museums this summer. Professors, instructors and students from all three public universities are involved in delivering presentations.
Saturday, June 20 - IMSEP Day
Rebecca Whittaker, University of Iowa - College of Engineering, will be the guest presenter at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Kids and parents will create edible landfills out of graham crackers, pie crust, various candies and vanilla pudding. Each layer represents the layers of a landfill and the importance of recycling/composting. At the 1:00 pm session, participants will create earth parfaits representing the layers of ground water (or water aquifer) and why it's important not to pollute. Each kid comes away with a better awareness of their impact on the environment and a tasty treat to boot!
Thursday, June 25 - $5 Fun Night & WHO-TV Weather Report Live
Dr. Recayu (Reg) Pecen's UNI Panther Solar eBoat Team will present to families at 6:00pm. Dr. Pecen's eBoat Team recently earned fourth place at the International Solar Splash Competition, the world championship of intercollegiate solar boating.
Saturday, July 11 - Science of Magic
University of Iowa's physics rock stars Dr. Dale Stille and Dr. Vincent Rodgers will take their traveling physics and astronomy show on the road to demonstrate how science really IS magic. Presentations are at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
