IMSEP — By the Numbers for FY2010 (updates to come)

    * Over 26,000 students, more than 500 pre-service teachers and nearly 1,500 teachers of mathematics and science participated in outreach programming through IMSEP despite a 19% reduction in funding compared to Year One.

    * The number of students pursuing science teaching in Iowa's public universities has increased by approximately 22 percent since 2007. the number of mathematics teachers is up by 63 percent over the same period of time.

    * The number os students entering into public universities to major in STEM fields is on the increase. Chemistry up approximately 34 percent since 2007; physics up about 30 percent; engineering up 14 percent; and biology up approximately 10 percent.

    * An IMSEP exhibit on Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., this fall inspired more than 8,000 youth about STEM in Iowa.

    * Over 100 public university faculty members worked with community school teachers and students through IMSEP-funded workshops and educational programs.

    * More than 1,500 teachers of mathematics and science improved their teaching through IMSEP-funded outreach.

    * Teachers and students from 185 Iowa communities and 88 counties participated in IMSEP.

    * "When are we ever gonna need this?" is now the favorite student question of mathematics and science teachers who participated in the Real World Externships for Teachers of Mathematics and Science program. The summer of 2011 will be the third year, joining the 33 other teachers in Iowa's classrooms that are taking lessons learned back to the classroom from businesses like Diamond-Vogel Paints; Pella Corporation; Principal Financial; Kemin Industries; P&G; Rockwell Collins and Deere, just to name a few.
