Real World Externships For Business
What is a Real World Externship?
The Real World Externships for Teachers of Mathematics, Science and Technology is a core program of the Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership (IMSEP) aimed at providing Iowa teachers of science, mathematics and technology with opportunities to gain invaluable "real-world" experience in local industries and businesses.
Created from the requests of Iowa students wanting to know, When am I ever going to use this in the real-world?, the Real World Externship Program provides educators with the experiences to answer this question for Iowa's students.
This unique school and business alliance launched in the summer of 2009 aims to:
- Create lasting partnerships between businesses/industries and your school.
- Connect your Extern experience directly to content and 21st Century Skills identified in the Iowa Core.
- Give your students real-world career information about businesses and agencies right here in Iowa.
- Provide you with an income booster while taking advantage of the opportunity to see and use the latest real-world applications of your discipline in a business or industry in your community.

What does it cost?
IMSEP pays mathematics, science and/or technology teachers interested in becoming Teacher Externs a competitive stipend to spend up to 6 weeks during the summer with businesses in their area, experiencing first-hand how the science, technology, engineering and mathematical (STEM) concepts are used daily in the work place. Externs have worked on high-level business projects in a variety of industries across the state. From working with a continuous improvement expert in surgical units at a regional hospital, to mussel diving and water quality monitoring, to mapping machine efficiencies at a major advanced-manufacturing business, Externs can offer uncommon expertise and save host sites time and money.
Time commitment: The Externship runs from approximately mid-June through July. A standard 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., 40-hour work week for up to six weeks over the summer is expected. However, a more flexible work schedule may be negotiated between businesses and Externs depending on work load and schedules.
The right teacher for the right job: IMSEP will work with interested host sites to select the right teachers within their geographic region who fit your needs on a case-by-case basis. At no cost to the business host.

Real-world Externships for Teachers of Math and Science
Iowa's 21st-century jobs require education that reflects real-world experiences. That's the foundation for IMSEP's Real World Teacher Externships.
By working outside the classroom, in local businesses and organizations, teachers learn how to modernize their curriculum and build in real-world lessons learned in the workplace; build relationships with in-town partners; and learn new ways to inspire students to investigate mathematics and science fields.
Teacher Externships pay better and offer different experiences than typical summer jobs.
By hosting a Real World Teacher Extern, local businesses support teachers who develop and encourage Iowa's future math and science workforce.
