Programs
In conjunction with the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership (IMSEP) is currently collecting an inventory of outreach and professional development activities related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) education. This inventory represents pre-K through post-graduate mathematics and science education programs across the state and may include:
- Pre-K through 12 STEM enrichment programs,
- In-service professional development efforts for pre-K through 12 STEM teachers,
- Pre-service projects supporting future STEM teachers,
- Post-baccalaureate STEM education initiatives, and
- Collegiate faculty STEM teaching enhancement efforts.
Core Programs supported and operated by IMSEP currently include:
- Iowa-Teach Mathematics & Science Teacher Recruitment Program
Offering tuition-waived courses exploring teaching, followed by paid internships in educational settings, educational exemplars as mentors, and competitive scholarships to ramp up the number of math and science teachers produced by the Regent universities - Project Lead The Way® Expansion
A national pre-engineering curriculum package for middle and high school students to learn science and math through applications to engineering. Here in Iowa this project is part of a statewide implementation system of the Division of Community College and Workforce Preparation within the Iowa Department of Education. - Real World Externships for Teachers of Mathematics and Science
Current science and math teachers summer-long paid externships in business and industry to provide opportunities to update skills while modernizing the curriculum and more accurately conveying career options to students. Such programs have been shown to improve retention too. - Outreach Projects
Over the course of the first two years of IMSEP operations, a number of exemplary enrichment programs for youth in science and mathematics, as well as outreach and professional development programs for teachers, were funded by the Iowa Mathematics & Science Education Partnership. - Corridor STEM Initiative (CSI)
IMSEP is an active support of the Corridor STEM Initiative (CSI) in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa city Technology Corridor. CSI focuses on educational efforts to enhance student learning in STEM to regain Iowa's status as the premier state in delivering this important brand of education.
